CSE Annual Awards

The Computer Science and Engineering Department (CSE) introduces the CSE Annual Awards to recognize students’ excellence and contributions across many categories including academic, research, leadership, community service, and talents.

Call for Application:
The CSE Department invites students and alumni to apply to one or more of the CSE Annual Awards for the year 2020.

  • local_activity1. CSE Undergraduate Academic Excellence Award

    Description:
    This award recognizes the academic achievements of AUS CSE undergraduate students. CSE undergraduate students compete for one of the eight categories below:
        • Highest ranked COE freshman
        • Highest ranked COE sophomore
        • Highest ranked COE junior
        • Highest ranked COE senior
        • Highest ranked CMP freshman
        • Highest ranked CMP sophomore
        • Highest ranked CMP junior
        • Highest ranked CMP senior

    Rules Specific to this Award:
        • Students do not need to nominate themselves. The winners are selected and announced by the CSE Department based on their CGPA.
        • The student must be listed on the Dean’s List of Spring 2020 or Fall 2020.
        • The student must maintain a minimum CGPA of 3.5.
        • The freshman award will be given to the student with the highest CGPA in Spring 2020 or Fall 2020 who accumulated between 15 and 29 earned credit hours with a maximum of 11 transfer credits.
        • The sophomore award will be given to the student with the highest CGPA in Spring 2020 or Fall 2020 who accumulated between 45 and 59 earned credit hours with a maximum of 20 transfer credits.
        • The junior award will be given to the student with the highest CGPA in Spring 2020 or Fall 2020 who accumulated between 75 and 89 earned credit hours with a maximum of 30 transfer credits.
        • The senior award will be given to the student with the highest CGPA in Spring 2020 or Fall 2020 who accumulated at least 105 earned credit hours with a maximum of 40 transfer credits.
        • Earned credit hours do not include preparatory courses.
        • In case of a CGPA tie, the award will be given to the student with the highest number of credit hours.

  • local_activity2. CSE Graduate Academic Excellence Award

    Description:
    This award recognizes the academic achievements of AUS CSE graduate students. CSE graduate students compete for the highest ranked MSCoE student.

    Rules Specific to this Award:
        • Students do not need to nominate themselves. The winners are selected and announced by the CSE Department based on their CGPA.
        • The student must have passed at least 5 graduate courses at AUS by the end of Fall 2020.

    Description:
    This award recognizes the contributions of AUS CSE undergraduate students to the research community and the advancement of knowledge within the CSE field.

        • The applicant has conducted the research during their undergraduate study period at AUS.

        • Contemporaneity of problem
        • Complexity of research
        • Innovation of solution
        • Impact of research
        • Publications

    Description:
    This award recognizes the contributions of AUS CSE graduate students to the research community and the advancement of knowledge within the CSE field.

  • local_activity5. Outstanding CSE Student Leadership Award

    Description:
    This award recognizes an AUS CSE student who has demonstrated exceptional leadership qualities at or outside the university. It recognizes the accomplishments of creative and entrepreneurial minds who were involved in the invention and/or commercialization of a useful product that benefits society.

    Rule Specific to this Award:
        • The applicant has demonstrated leadership traits during their study period at AUS.

        • Responsibility and accountability
        • Number and nature of coordinated events
        • Adapting to change

  • local_activity6. Outstanding CSE Student Community Service Award

    Description:
    This award recognizes an AUS CSE student who has demonstrated an extraordinary contribution to the improvement of the CSE Department, the College of Engineering, the American University of Sharjah and society in general.

    Rule Specific to this Award:
        • The applicant has conducted the community service during their study period at AUS.

    Selection Criteria:
        • Impact on society
        • Length of the service
        • Nature and difficulty of the service

  • local_activity7. Outstanding CSE Graduate Teaching Assistant Award

    Description:
    This award recognizes the best CSE Graduate Teaching Assistant (GTA) for their exceptional work in terms of teaching, usefulness and interaction with students, and helpfulness to faculty and lab instructors.

    Rules Specific to this Award:
        • The applicant should be involved with at least 10 hours of lab teaching per week during Spring 2020 and/or Fall 2020.
        • Faculty, lab instructors, and students may be contacted for feedback about the applicant’s performance.

    Selection Criteria:
        • Competency and technical knowledge
        • Helpfulness to faculty and lab instructors
        • Interaction with students
        • Motivation and commitment

  • local_activity8. Outstanding CSE Student Talent Award

    Description:
    This award recognizes an exceptional AUS CSE student who demonstrates a talent mainly in a non‐CSE related field. Talents include, but are not limited to, music, painting, sports, and many others. Students with CSE related talents can also apply provided they exhibit an exceptional talent related to the field.

        • Proficiency and excellence
        • Creativity
        • Originality
        • Media presence and engagement with target audience

  • local_activity9. Most‐Engaged CSE Alumni Award

    Description:
    This award recognizes a CSE alumnus or alumna who was actively engaged with the CSE Department in promoting and advancing its reputation, has offered his/her services to the CSE Department, or demonstrated sustained excellence, accomplishment, and creativity in their professional field during the academic period between 2017-2020.

    Rules Specific to this Award:
        • Application is open only for AUS CSE alumni.
        • Alumni engagement took place during the academic period between 2017‐2020.

    Selection Criteria:
        • Degree of involvement with the CSE Department
        • Importance and impact to the CSE Department
        • Extent to which they set a role model to existing CSE students

         1. The application deadline is March 1, 2021.
         2. The applicants must not be involved with any academic dishonesty or misconduct incidents at AUS.
         3. Application is open only for full-time AUS CSE students during Spring 2020 or Fall 2020 and AUS CSE alumni.
         4. Can either be self‐nominated or peer‐nominated unless specified otherwise.
         5. Applicants are encouraged to provide sufficient evidence that targets each criterion for better chances of winning.
         6. The award winners in the previous years may not apply to the same award again. They can apply to other CSE Annual Awards instead.
         7. The CSE Department holds the right to cancel any award for a particular academic year without prior notice if the selection criteria are not met by any applicant.
         8. Trophies and Certificates of achievement will be provided to the winners. In addition, winners accomplishment will be highlighted on the CSE portal.
